Lap Band Surgery is one of the fastest growing solutions to weight loss. With the number of obese people in this country and insurance companies picking up the tab, more people than ever before are opting for weight loss surgery to help them lose the unwanted pounds. This surgery will not only help you take the weight off, but it will help you get your health back and is minimally invasive in comparison to other types of gastric bypass surgery. This weight loss surgery will reduce and may even eliminate the medical conditions that occur as the result of being obese.
Lap band surgery is performed by placing a band around the upper part of the stomach through a small opening on the outside if the stomach. There is a port that is placed underneath the skin on the top part of the abdomen. This port is used to adjust the restriction of the band throughout the weight loss process. Surgery should take only about an hour and an overnight stay in the hospital is required in most cases. I foresee this procedure being performed on an outpatient basis within the next few years.
Saline is injected or removed through the port to restrict or increase the amount of room for food. Most patients return to work within a week of their surgery. You will be on a liquid diet for a few weeks, followed by soft foods until you are able to return to a normal diet. Sounds simple enough, doesn’t it. Well the surgery is the easy part. The weight will come of easily at first, but it is imperative that you maintain a lifestyle of healthy choices. Gastric bypass surgery is a tool. It can get you where you are going but it will be up to you to stay there.
