If you are researching the possibility of having lap band surgery, it won’t be long until your thoughts move to the cost of lap band surgery. While many insurance companies now pay for gastric bypass surgery, not as many insurance companies will pay for lap band surgery as the Roux-en-Y, because it is newer and doesn’t have as long a history as the RNY.
Lap band surgery has a much lower price tag than the Roux-en-Y, which is a much more invasive surgery. Many lap band surgery centers will perform the gastric banding procedure for $10,000-$15,000, although I foresee this price coming down over the next few years. In most cases financing is available. If you compare the price of being obese to the price of the lap band surgery, the surgery will probably be less expensive than several years of paying for obesity related medical conditions.
The lap band procedure can be found in Mexico for around $10,000. They have been performing this surgery in Mexico for several years. There are package deals online that include a hotel stay and the price of the surgery. This is something to consider, but keep in mind you will be flying within days of having a medical procedure. The cost of lap band surgery will come down in this country as this procedure becomes more common.
If you really want this surgery, there is financing available and in the long run it is going to be less expensive than paying for the doctors visits and medications that will be required if you remain obese. This is the reason that Medicare has recent begun paying for gastric bypass surgery.
Gastric bypass surgery will be worth every penny as long as your recovery is normal. It will be a major change in your life, but mine was a welcome one. Be ready to change the way you live your life!
